Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) is a large, spiny cactus. It bears numerous red, sweet-juicy fruits. Archeological data and early historic observations indicate Native Americans relied on prickly pear for food, medicine, and also as a source of water, needles and containers. Some places prickly pear is commonly found includes southern Texas, southern parts of California and Mexico.

Recently, researchers at Tulane University (in New Orleans, LA) and at University of California have performed studies on the implications of prickly pear in hangovers.
