What Causes Hangovers?

hangover-bear1What really causes hangovers?  Is it dehydration or simply a nutrient depletion?  A hangover is not from overindulgence of alcohol, its from dehydration, nutrient depletion, and perhaps poisons in alcohol.

“There’s good evidence emerging that the chief cause of hangover is acute withdrawal from alcohol,” says Mack Mitchell, M.D., vice president of the Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation in Baltimore, and assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University. “The cells in your brain physically change in response to the alcohol’s presence; when the alcohol is gone, you go through withdrawal until those cells get used to doing without the alcohol.” Couple that with the effects alcohol has on the blood vessels in your head (they can swell significantly), and you end up living through a day after that you’d rather forget.”

Alcohol Depletes Body Of Nutrients
As this may hold true one things for sure, alcohol does deplete your body of necessary nutrients including vitamins, minerals and blood sugar.  That’s why its so important to replenish those nutrients while drinking.

Drink Lots Of Water
Alcohol is diuretic which means it flushes fluids from the body and increases urination.  So don’t drink to much coffee after waking up with a hangover because coffee does the same things.  This is why its so important to be drinking high quality, high PH water.  You need to be hydrated.

Stay Away from Poisonous Drinks
Some mix drinks may contain 2 ingredients which are poisonous to our body’s.  Methanol and acetone are the two and they can be found in the mixers for the drinks.  Stay away from this even if it taste good.

What causes hangovers is not just one thing it can be a multiple of things but we do know that depletion of necessary nutrients and dehydration are the two major reasons.  The next time you go out to have some fun remember what causes hangovers and stop it before you feel it the next day!
