You wake up at 6am. Your mouth feels like sandpaper. Your head keeps up that slow, thudding rhythm. And somewhere in a kitchen drawer is a packet of electrolytes, because just about every corner of the internet has sold that as the fix.

So you tear it open, pour it into a glass of water, and wait.

Sometimes you feel clearly better. Sometimes you feel just as rough as you did before, only now with a lemon-lime aftertaste. Why the split?

We have been formulating hydration and recovery products in Colorado since 2008. Over that stretch we have read a lot of hangover research, and we have watched plenty of brands make confident claims the science does not actually back. So this one is going to stay closer to the evidence.

This is a straightforward look at electrolytes and hangovers. What they fix, what they miss, and how we would use them in practice.

Quick answer: do electrolytes help a hangover?

Partly. Electrolytes help you rehydrate faster than plain water, which can ease thirst, dry mouth, dizziness and lightheadedness. Research has not, however, found a connection between electrolyte disruption and how bad a hangover actually feels. Dehydration and hangovers are two separate problems that tend to show up together.

That is the short version. The longer version is more useful, because it changes how you should use them.

First, what alcohol actually does to your fluids

Alcohol is a real diuretic. That part is not a myth.

Your body relies on a hormone called vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone or ADH. Think of it as the valve on your kidneys. When vasopressin is doing its job, your kidneys hold onto water and send it back into your bloodstream. When vasopressin drops, that valve opens and water heads straight for your bladder.

Alcohol suppresses vasopressin. The valve opens. You spend the night walking to the bathroom.

A physiologist named M. G. Eggleton put a number on this back in 1942: roughly 10 mL of extra urine for every gram of alcohol consumed. The effect also scales with dose, so a night of whiskey pushes more fluid out than a night of light beer. Beer is mostly water, which offsets a decent chunk of what it triggers. A shot of tequila brings almost no water of its own.

So yes, you lose fluid. And when fluid leaves, minerals leave with it.

Alcohol also nudges your kidneys to dump more magnesium and calcium into urine. One study in moderate drinkers found a dose-related increase in magnesium and calcium excretion compared to non-drinkers (source). Worth being precise here, though: the dramatic magnesium depletion numbers you will see quoted around the internet come from studies on chronic, heavy alcohol use. That is a different situation than one rough Saturday.

By morning you are a little low on fluid and slightly off on minerals. Sounds like a textbook case for electrolytes, right?

Here is where it gets more complicated.

The part almost every article skips

If dehydration caused hangovers, then rehydrating would fix hangovers. Simple.

It does not work that way.

In 2024, researchers at Utrecht University led by Dr. Joris Verster, who founded the Alcohol Hangover Research Group, reviewed every available study on this exact question. Their conclusion was that hangover and dehydration are "two co-occurring but independent consequences of alcohol consumption" (source).

Two things happening in parallel. Not one causing the other.

The review also noted that studies measuring sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium during a hangover found no meaningful correlation between electrolyte levels and how severe the hangover felt. Some people had disrupted electrolytes and mild hangovers. Some had normal electrolytes and felt wrecked.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says the same thing in its hangover fact sheet. Research has not found a correlation between the extent of electrolyte disruption and hangover severity, and in most people, "the body will quickly restore electrolyte balance once the effects of alcohol subside" (source).

So what is driving the misery?

The current evidence points toward oxidative stress and inflammation. Studies have found that hangover severity tracks closely with inflammatory markers in the blood, including IL-6, TNF-alpha and C-reactive protein (source). In plain English, your body responds to processing alcohol a bit like it responds to fighting off a bug. That is one reason a bad hangover can feel oddly like the flu.

So do electrolytes help a hangover, or not?

They help. They just help with less than the marketing implies.

Think of it like a car that will not start on a cold morning. The windshield is also frozen over. Scraping the windshield is genuinely useful, and you will be glad you did it, but it is not the reason the engine will not turn.

Electrolytes are the windshield.

Here is the honest symptom-by-symptom breakdown:

Notice the pattern? Electrolytes handle the plumbing problems. They do not touch the inflammation problems.

That matters, because thirst, dizziness and cramping are real symptoms that make you feel awful. Fixing them is worth doing. Just do not expect a lemon-lime packet to erase a headache that is being driven by an inflammatory response.

When electrolytes matter a lot more

There is a version of a rough morning where electrolytes go from "helpful" to "actually important." A few situations flip that switch:

You threw up. Vomiting pulls out real volumes of sodium, potassium and chloride. This is not a subtle shift in the data. This is genuine loss that needs replacing.

You sweated. Dancing for four hours in a packed venue, a summer festival, a wedding reception in August. Sweat is salty, and you lost a lot of it on top of whatever alcohol did.

You were somewhere hot. Vegas in July. A beach in Mexico. Heat stacks fluid loss on top of alcohol's diuretic effect.

You were at altitude. This one is our home turf. At elevation you breathe faster and drier, you lose more water through respiration, and the same three drinks that were fine at sea level hit differently. We are based in Colorado and Zaca started in the mountains, which is the whole reason our formula exists in the first place.

In all four of those cases you are dealing with genuine dehydration on top of a hangover. Not just a hangover. That is when reaching for electrolytes moves from optional to smart.

What to look for in a hangover electrolyte drink

If you are going to use one, use a good one. A few things separate the useful products from the expensive sugar water:

Sodium should lead. Sodium is the electrolyte that actually helps your body hold onto the fluid you drink instead of passing it straight through. Research on rehydration after fluid loss has been clear on this for decades: you have to replace electrolytes along with the water, not just the water (source). A product with a token pinch of sodium is mostly a flavor packet.

Potassium and magnesium should be there too. They support the minerals alcohol nudges out through your kidneys.

Watch the sugar. A lot of hangover drinks are loaded with it. Your stomach is already irritated, and a big sugar hit on an unhappy stomach is not doing you any favors.

Don't just chug plain water. This is the counterintuitive one. Drinking large volumes of plain water while your sodium is already low can dilute you further. In extreme cases that leads to hyponatremia, which is a genuine medical problem. Water plus electrolytes beats water alone. Convenience is a real feature. The best product is the one you will actually use at 2am when you are tired and do not want to find a glass, measure a scoop, and stir.

What electrolytes can't do (and yes, that includes ours)

Electrolytes won't sober you up. Nothing speeds alcohol metabolism. Your liver works at its own pace and no drink, pill or chewable changes that clock.

They won't erase a hangover. As of right now there is no commercially available hangover treatment with proven efficacy in the scientific literature. The Alcohol Hangover Research Group has stated this plainly (source). Anyone claiming otherwise is ahead of the evidence.

They won't undo a bad night. Six drinks and four hours of sleep is going to feel like six drinks and four hours of sleep, regardless of what you put in the glass.

And then the boring stuff that actually works: sleep, time, food, and going easier next time.

The bottom line

Electrolytes for a hangover are worth using. They are just not the miracle the marketing suggests.

They fix the plumbing. They don't fix the inflammation. And the inflammation is most of what is making you feel like a stranger to yourself at 6am.
