Quick answer: Electrolyte drinks can ease headaches tied to fluid and mineral loss, including the kind that show up after heavy sweating, flying, drinking alcohol, or arriving at altitude. They do not treat migraine as a medical condition. If your head hurts because your body is short on fluid and sodium, replacing both usually works better than water by itself.

You already know the feeling. A dull, tight band across your forehead around 3pm. A throb that gets louder every time you stand up or look down at your phone. You grab water, drink a glass, and wait. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it does nothing.

Then you start asking whether you need more than water. Maybe an electrolyte drink.

That is a fair question. We have been asking it since 2008. Zaca started in Colorado, where thin air and dry mountain days give people headaches for a living, and we have spent years formulating and testing at altitude to figure out what actually helps a body recover.

Here is the honest version of what the science says.

Why dehydration makes your head hurt

Your brain does not have pain receptors. It cannot hurt. So what is doing the throbbing?

The leading theory points to the meninges, the protective lining that wraps around your brain. When you are low on fluid, the volume inside your skull shifts. That lining gets tugged on, and the pain receptors sitting in it start firing. Think of it like a drum head that loses tension. Everything pulls in a direction it was not meant to pull.

Harvard Health describes it plainly: fluid can shift out of the brain when you are dehydrated, putting traction on the meninges and stimulating pain receptors. They also note the exact reason is still not fully understood. Nobody has nailed it down completely.

The research backs up that this is real, and common. A 2004 study in Headache by Blau and colleagues surveyed people about fluid loss and head pain. Roughly 1 in 10 reported what the researchers named "water-deprivation headache." Most of them got total relief within 30 minutes of drinking, somewhere between 200 and 1,500 mL. Others needed one to three hours. The pain typically got worse with head movement, bending over, or walking around.

Sound familiar?

There is more. A follow-up survey of 95 people with migraine found that 34 of them recognized fluid deprivation as something that could set off an attack. The author noted at the time that the medical profession had not caught on. (Source: PubMed)

And a pilot trial published in the European Journal of Neurology asked headache patients to drink an extra 1.5 liters of water daily for 12 weeks. It was not a slam dunk, and the sample was small, but the intervention group reported meaningfully better quality-of-life scores than the control group.

So the connection is well established. Dehydration and headaches travel together.

What electrolytes actually do up there

Here is where a lot of blog posts get lazy and just say "electrolytes are the spark plugs of your body." Let us do better than that.

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when they dissolve in fluid. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride. They do two jobs that matter for your head.

Job one: they decide where your water goes. Sodium is the main mineral controlling fluid volume outside your cells. Water follows sodium. If you drink a liter of plain water with no sodium on board, a good chunk of it moves straight through you and out. Your kidneys read the dilution and dump it. You pee clear, you still feel foggy, and the headache hangs around. That is the whole reason how to hydrate fast is a different question from how to drink more water.

Job two: they set the excitability of your nerves. This is where magnesium comes in, and it is the one mineral with real headache research behind it. Magnesium helps regulate neurotransmission and blocks glutamate, an excitatory signal. Low magnesium appears to leave the brain more excitable and more sensitive.

Back in 2012, the American Headache Society and the American Academy of Neurology gave magnesium a Level B rating for migraine prevention. That means "probably effective." Important context though: that is a therapeutic dose in a clinical protocol. It is not the same as the magnesium in a hydration drink. Any brand telling you their beverage delivers a clinical migraine dose is stretching it.

5 situations where an electrolyte drink makes real sense

Not every headache is a hydration headache. But these five scenarios are the ones where fluid and mineral loss is doing the damage, and where an electrolyte drink earns its spot.

1. You sweated a lot

Long run, hot gym, yard work in July. Sweat takes sodium out with the water. If you replace only the water, you dilute what is left. Plain water can leave you worse off than you started. This is the classic case for electrolytes over water.

2. You went up in elevation

Altitude headache is its own animal. At elevation you breathe faster and lose more fluid through respiration, plus mountain air is dry as a bone. Headache is the cardinal symptom of acute mountain sickness, which affects a big share of unacclimatized travelers above 8,000 feet.

Now here is the part that matters, and almost nobody says it. Hydration does not prevent altitude sickness. The Wilderness Medical Society guidelines state that forced or over hydration "has never been found to prevent altitude illness" and may actually raise hyponatremia risk. What they do say is that staying adequately hydrated matters, because dehydration symptoms mimic altitude sickness symptoms. (Source: ScienceDirect)

Translation: hydration will not stop AMS, but being dehydrated at 10,000 feet stacks a second headache on top of the one you might already get. 3. You flew

Cabin humidity often sits in the single digits. Add cabin pressure equivalent to roughly 6,000 to 8,000 feet, a coffee, a glass of wine, and six hours of not moving. That is a headache recipe. Our breakdown of supplements for jet lag covers the full picture.

4. You drank alcohol last night

Alcohol is a diuretic. It also dilates blood vessels and produces acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct your liver has to clear. So a hangover headache has a hydration component and a metabolic one.

We will be straight with you here, because we already wrote about it in Gatorade for a hangover. Research from the Alcohol Hangover Research Group has found that electrolyte levels in hungover people do not differ that much from baseline, and where they do, they do not track with how bad the hangover feels. Electrolytes alone are not a hangover fix. Rehydrating helps you feel more human, but it is one piece.

5. You are sick, fasting, or deep in keto

Vomiting, diarrhea, fever, intermittent fasting, and the first week of a low-carb diet all move fluid and minerals out fast. The "keto flu" headache is well known for this reason. We covered it in how to stay hydrated on keto.

When electrolytes are not the answer

This is the section most brands skip. We are putting it in the middle of the page on purpose.

Migraine is a neurological disease, not a hydration problem. Dehydration can trigger or prolong an attack in some people. That is supported. But an electrolyte drink is not a migraine treatment, and no supplement company should tell you otherwise. If you get recurring, disabling attacks with nausea, aura, or light sensitivity, you need a headache specialist, not a beverage.

Caffeine withdrawal headaches come from missing your coffee, not missing sodium. Electrolytes will not touch it.

Tension headaches driven by jaw clenching, posture, screens, or stress respond to different things entirely.

Medication overuse headache is a real and under-recognized problem. If you are taking OTC painkillers more than a couple of days a week for headaches, talk to a doctor.

And some headaches are emergencies. Sudden, severe, "worst of my life" pain. Headache with fever and a stiff neck. Headache after a head injury. Headache with confusion, weakness, vision loss, or trouble speaking. None of that is a hydration issue. Get medical care.

The overhydration trap nobody talks about

Here is the twist that top-ranking articles on this topic almost all miss.

You can absolutely give yourself a headache by drinking too much water.

It is called hyponatremia. When you take in far more fluid than your body can excrete, blood sodium drops. Cells swell, including in the brain. Early symptoms are nausea, fatigue, and, yes, headache. Serious cases can escalate to seizures and worse.

This is not a fringe scenario. Exercise-associated hyponatremia has been documented in marathoners, triathletes, football players, and hikers. The Third International Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia Consensus Development Conference identified overdrinking beyond thirst as the primary cause.

That last part deserves emphasis. Sports drinks are hypotonic. They contain a lot less sodium than most people assume. Chugging them by the liter does not protect you from hyponatremia if you are overdrinking.

So the sensible read is this: hydration is a balance, not a race. Both ends of the spectrum can give you a headache. What to look for in an electrolyte drink for headaches

If you decide an electrolyte drink is worth trying, here is the checklist we would use. It is the same one we apply to our own formulas.

1. Low or no sugar. A lot of sports drinks carry 20 to 36 grams per bottle. Sugar spikes give you a crash, and the crash can compound the headache. If you want the full argument, see sugar free hydration.

2. Real magnesium and potassium, not just salt. Plenty of products are basically salt water with flavoring. Magnesium is the mineral with the best headache evidence behind it.

3. Sodium that fits your situation. Ultra-high-sodium formulas make sense for a four-hour trail race in the heat. They are overkill for a desk worker with an afternoon headache. Match the dose to the day.

4. No artificial dyes, sweeteners, or additives you cannot pronounce. Some people find artificial sweeteners and additives are personal headache triggers. Why introduce a variable you are trying to eliminate?

5. Something you will actually use. The best formula is the one that is in your bag. Powders need water, a bottle, and a stirring moment. That is three points of friction between you and hydration.

Electrolyte drinks for headaches are not magic and they are not snake oil. They sit in a specific lane.

If your head hurts because you sweated through a shirt, got off a plane, woke up after a night out, or drove from sea level to 9,000 feet, then fluid and mineral loss is likely part of the story, and replacing both is a reasonable move.

If your head hurts for other reasons, hydration will not solve it, and no supplement brand should tell you it will.

Do electrolyte drinks help headaches?

They can, when the headache comes from fluid and mineral loss. Sweating, altitude, flying, alcohol, and illness all deplete both water and electrolytes, and replacing both together typically works better than water alone. Electrolyte drinks do not treat migraine as a condition.

What's the best drink for a dehydration headache?

Something with sodium and magnesium and little to no sugar. Plain water works for mild cases. If you have lost a lot of fluid through sweat, water alone can dilute your remaining sodium and leave you feeling worse.

How long does it take for electrolytes to help a headache?
